Woodcuts - J. Borges - Pernambuco
José Francisco Borges began publishing volumes of the so-called "literatura de cordel" in the 1960s. This is popular literature from northeastern Brazil, which dates back to the seventeenth century and presents legends, current or historical events, crimes and religious stories in the language of simple people, orientated towards the taste of the public. The covers and illustrations of these cordel booklets are designed with woodcarvings (xylographs).
J. Borges illustrated more than 200 cordel booklets, but also began to produce woodcarvings independent from cordel booklets as early as the 1970s. He still lives and works in his native town of Bezerros in the state of Pernambuco.
